newbie help! 21 Years, 11 Months ago
I'm new at telnetting. How do I get started, after the program has been run and configured? Where can I find info about telnetting to computers? Do I need to know someone who has telnet set up on their computer, or what? 'm not sure how this works, really. :)

thanks

Pat

Telnet functions somewhat like a 'Command Prompt' window in Windows. Only, the telnet client displays the command prompt of a remote machine. If you don't have a host to connect to, you may not need this software.

First, you need a host to telnet to. A telnet host will typically be a UNIX host running a telnet daemon. The AbsoluteTelnet client will connect to the telnet host via TCP/IP, so you need to be connected to a network and you must know the hostname of the server you are connecting to.

But, because telnet sends all of its data unencrypted, you should never telnet to a host over an insecure network (like the internet). That's where SSH comes in. SSH is like telnet, but everything is encrypted. It also throws in a few goodies like port forwarding and X11 forwarding, but that's for another discussion. AbsoluteTelnet also supports SSH (both versions 1 and 2), so you have the option to do it the way you want.

Let me know if this helps!!

Thanks man. I understand the protocol and all that now, but is there a list (not of library's) like in usenet, of computers/domains, etc... that I can get? I dont just want to look up books. :)

Well, you can use telnet (or SSH) to connect to virtually any host on the entire internet. The problem, as usual, is permissions. There aren't that many public access telnet systems any more, besides some of the remaining libraries. All of the lists I've ever found contain mostly out-dated information. If you find some, let me know.

Most people don't go looking for Telnet software unless they already have a need for it (and a host to connect to).

Well, now that I've said that, I've actually found some links to some gaming systems:

(hostname:port)
forsakenlands.net:6666
clubmet.com:23
rag.com:2222
208.231.151.239:23

Enjoy!!!

I too am a newbie and am about to start looking after a web site for a freiend which I have to SSH2 to so that I can check the e-mails.

I havn't used Absolute Telnet yet so tried to connect to one of the games links you listed above to get a bit of practice and I keep getting an error message

"Connect failed
Winsock error: Connection Refused"

Do you have any ideawhat this means and how I can get around it? Is a problem with my PC or with the address's (which I doubt)

Thanks

I just re-tried each of those addresses and they all work. With these hosts, however it's important that the protocol you are trying to use is 'telnet' and the part of the address before the semicolon is the hostname and the part after the semicolon is the port.

If you have AbsoluteTelnet installed an have allowed it to assume the role of 'default telnet application ' (Which it prompts you to do when you startup the first time), then you *should* be able to paste these links into your browser address bar to connect... (assuming your firewall is not blocking these ports)

telnet://forsakenlands.net:6666
telnet://clubmet.com:23
telnet://rag.com:2222
telnet://208.231.151.239:23
