When I use What's Up Gold to connect to a device, it always opens with a new connection file with SSH as the conneciton type. I need it to open to telnet.

You can do this by changing the global defaults.
Open AbsoluteTelnet without any current connection file (no .tnt file). Go to Options->Properties->Connection and change the type to 'telnet'. Then go to The 'Global' tab and hit the button that says 'save all current settings as application global default settings'. From then on, any time you open AbsoluteTelnet the default connection type will be 'telnet'.
