TOPIC: Failed SSH2 connection crashes Absolute Telnet

Failed SSH2 connection crashes Absolute Telnet 16 Years, 5 Months ago
I manage a network with various server and network hardware platforms. I use Absolute Telnet Client 5.49. I always prefer SSH2 in establishing my remote connections. I have no issues with using Absolute Telnet for any of my SSH sessions except for one.
Whenever I attempt to establish a SSH session on an Extreme Networks EXOS series box, the result is that all sessions (tabs) crash and then Absolute Telnet abends.
I can establish and maintain all SSH sessions with all earlier hardware products from Extreme.
I have no problems establishing and maintaining SSH sessions on Extreme Networks EXOS series boxes using PuTTY.
I have no problems using Absolute Telnet TELNET on any system.
Any thoughts, ideas?

Gregory,

Very interesting. I'm sure we'll be able to work through this if you can give me some more information...

1. Does the problem happen before or after authentication? In other words, can you reproduce the problem by using an invalid username/password or do you have to actually login?

2. Can you give me access to this box temporarily (or one like it) so that I can do some testing?

Thanks for the support Brian!

1. It seems I crash during authentication. The connections gets established but as soon as I pass my credentials I crash.

2. I have set-up a typical system for you to work with. I'll pass the specifics on to you through email cover.

Please do try a Telnet first to see if you can get connected. Then try SSH and set what happens...

The ssh server is rejecting the session request because AbsoluteTelnet is requesting data buffers that are too large. Because the Extreme Networks box is an embeded device, the memory footprint is kept low and Absolute is requesting more memory for the session data buffer than the sshd will allow.

This alone would not cause a crash, but Absolute is not handling the session rejection well and crashes as a result. I've put two things in place to handle this:

1. I've reduced the size of the data buffers to prevent the session from being rejected.

2. I've fixed a bug that causes a crash when a session request fails. You will now get an appropriate error message.

Download and try it here. This fix will be available in version 6.XX and higher.

I tried your fixes Brian and they work great. I have tried SSH2 sessions on all of my gear now and have had no new problems.

Thank you for the great support.

AbsoluteTelnet Rocks! and so does the support!
