X11 port forwarding over SSH2 slow? 20 Years, 6 Months ago
The X11 port forwarding using SSH2 with all different compression levels and encryption formats is much slower then when using SSH1. I tried the same with PuTTY and it works snappy with either SSH1 or SSH2. I've had this problem since pre 2.0 days, currently running 2.13 and talking to a RH Linux 8.0 machine reporting SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.4p1. Is there any known issues here or something else I can tweek with?

Thanks

Steve, could you give me some examples of programs you're trying to run and what kind of timings you are experiencing? I've gotten pretty snappy responses from X forwarding on both SSH1 and SSH2 in Absolute. Comparable to Putty anyway. I'm not saying you're wrong, here, but I need some more examples to reproduce the problem you're having.

I am running Labtam's XSecurePro 7.2 as a server and running Mozilla web browser from my Linux server in one example, and thou not terribly scientific the response times between moving from menu to menu, i.e. from the File dropdown to Edit etc. is noticably slower. This isn't limited to mozilla just an example. Another is running OpenOffice Calc which when loading will take much longer to load under SSH2 and sometimes fails to load completly.

My environment is not exactly the same as yours, so your results may be different than mine for that reason, but I still have not been able to tell a difference between X Forwarding under SSH1 and SSH2.

I connect to my SSH server over a residential DSL connection. My X server is X-Win32 and I've tried quickly switching between the dropdown menus of Netscape Navigator without any trouble. No difference in speed that I can tell anyway.

BTW, my SSH server is OpenSSH 3.4p1

Can you give me any more clues I might be able to use to reproduce the problem? Also, exactly how much of a timing difference should I be noticing between SSH1 and SSH2?
