Is there a way of doing a automatic logon with a telnet session such as there is with SSH1 or SSH2, i.e. set a script that would pass a username and/or password when the session opens.

Scripting capabilities will be one of the first things implemented after version 2.00 goes out the door. I expect to have something by the end of the year, but there is nothing yet. Version 2.00 *will* have key mapping, so you could put your username and password in programmable function keys, but I realise that's not quite the same as what you're asking.
For now, ssh can do what you ask, plus it's more secure.
